This piece is really special to me. It was written in the memory of the commissioner's late father. The piece was never intended to be mournful, but more a tribute to the good in all of us and loving people for who they are.
The poem morphed into something really wonderful. A friend of mine, Taylor Mills— a dual degree P.H.D philosophy student and law student at Michigan State— adapted a poem of my choosing, translating it into Spanish, and marrying the old poem with the new. The presence of Spanish in the work is meant to represent the commissioner's love for his father's missionary work in Spanish-speaking countries.
