Last Night of winter
About the Piece
This is a truly special piece, with a stunning text by poet Brian Newhouse. The work was written for the impeccable Wiley East High School choral program, and for conductor Nathan Dame.
The text really speaks to a familiar feeling in my life, whether it be metaphorical or literal, of being thankful for the seasons of life in the midst of frozen seasons. Thankfully, warmth always returns, no matter how cold things may get in one’s own heart and mind.
Many thanks to Brian Newhouse for his incredible words on display here.
The Text
Thank you, God, that Earth ever turns;
that it carries us always to Spring.
My frozen fields will soon (soften, or break)
and be blessed,
as I am borne
toward dawn.
And the stars tonight -- oh, how they sing!
Their light finally finds this darkened heart.
There is no song I ask but theirs,
as I am borne
on this dear earth
toward dawn.
